Business Problem
NBBJ’s internal digital tools were being developed without a shared visual or structural foundation. Designers lacked reusable components, and developers had to build interfaces from scratch, often resulting in inefficiencies, inconsistent user experiences, and an outdated visual style. There was a growing need for a system that could unify design efforts, reduce development time, and bring a modern, branded look to our tools.
Design Solution
I adapted an open-source design system to reflect NBBJ’s brand identity, customizing components, typography, color schemes, and interaction patterns. This branded system served as a shared language between design and development teams. Designers could rapidly prototype with a consistent set of tools, and developers gained access to pre-built, branded components that accelerated implementation. The system eventually expanded across studio teams, becoming the visual and structural foundation for new tools and products.
Reflections
The impact of the design system was clear: it significantly cut down the time needed to create new tools and ensured consistent, high-quality outcomes. More importantly, it transformed our digital tools into experiences that were visually cohesive and modern, while also being more intuitive, user-friendly, and enjoyable to use. The tools became easier to navigate and more engaging for both internal teams and end users. This initiative empowered teams, improved collaboration, and established a scalable foundation for future design and development work at NBBJ.
